THE CARBINER
A Wild Ride
BMX riding siblings Isabelle and Oliver Beams were guests at the 2023 Derby Day Luncheon at the Elwick Racecourse on Friday February 10. The teenagers who were recipients of a Carbine Club Tasmania sponsorship had just completed a hectic year of competition which included a trip to France to represent Australia at the UCI BMX World Championships, competing in the Track Attack series in Victoria and travelling to Launceston for the BMX National Championships. 'Izzy' picked up the Most Improved Senior Award at her club's end of year presentations while 'Ollie' scored the Most Improved Junior and Sportsmanship Awards. Carbine Club Tasmania President Steve Adermann interviewed the talented sister/brother combination during his address at the annual Derby Day Luncheon event which was attended by more than 200 people.
It was a busy day for President who also inducted three new members to the club's ranks including Paul Gadomski, Stuart Percey and John Barry-Murphy who were each presented with their Carbine Club tie, name badge and lapel pin.
This year the Derby Day Luncheon special guest speakers were Group One winning trainers Lindsey Smith and Tony McEvoy who were interviewed by Tasmanian Turf Club Vice-Chairman Brent Crawford. The son of former Caulfield based trainer Mick Crawford managed to extract some interesting and often humorous stories from the duo, who were each presented with a bottle of Remnant Tasmanian Single Malt Whiskey as thank you gift from Carbine Club member Phil Collidge.
Guests were invited to retain their tables in the TRC Members area to enjoy the Tasmanian Derby Day Twilight Race Meeting which featured an eight-event card including the Carbine Club Plate. The 1200 metre Handicap event for three-year-olds was won by Brendon McCoull on board the Adam Trinder trained 'Muscle Up'. The bay or brown gelding finished a length in front of Sistine, with third place going to Miami Sun which carried the Carbine Club Tasmania Racing silks.
A number of Carbine Club Tasmania members and committeemen were in the mounting yard for the presentation of the impressive trophy to the group of excited owners.
