THE CARBINER

Turkish Delight

The owner of Turk Warrior - the 2022 Carbine Club Handicap winner - was delighted with the performance of his 3 year-old gelding after saluting in the 5th race on Schweppes Tasmanian Derby Day. Turkish-born Seyit Basol paid just $16,000 for for his champion thoroughbred at the 2019 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sales and has been thrilled with his performances since, recording nine wins from 10 starts. Accepting the impressive silver plate trophy from Carbine Club Tasmania President Steve Adermann, Mr Basol hinted that Turk Warrior will likely head to Launceston next for the $75,000 3YO Classic on Cup Day.

Turk Warrior was the 'top weight' in the 1100 metre race with a 62 kg impost, however stable apprentice jockey Codi Jordan was able to lessen the load by claiming 3 kilos. Despite dropping back from 1600 meters to the short sprint journey, the impressive gelding made light work of the task.

Trainer Glenn Stevenson told leading Tasmanian Racing journalist Peter Staples he was confident about winning the race, because his runner was even fitter when he was when beaten over the mile at his last start. Stevenson said, "Codi rode the horse exactly how I asked, and he's pulled up like he could go around again."

Turk Warrior (Outreach-Ehor), affectionately known as 'donkey' around the stables, took his career stake earnings to over $425,000 with this latest win. Second place getter 'Emily' was three lengths away at the winning post, followed by 'Peace Be Upon Him' in third.

Carbine Club members Stephen Farquer and Damon Wise who have an interest in 'Outbound' agreed to have their horse carry the Carbine Club colours in the race. The Adam Trinder trained gelding ridden by Troy Baker finished in 5th spot. More photos here.
